Insulated curtain wall back pans fabricated by Profelez

Curtain wall back pans are installed behind spandrel glass and other opaque areas of a curtain wall. On some projects they also sit behind metal cladding panels.

Profelez fabricates back pans in a range of shapes and sizes to suit your curtain wall or cladding system, for projects in Toronto, the GTA, and across Ontario.

What Curtain Wall Back Pans Do

A back pan closes off the opaque zones of a curtain wall and carries the insulation that keeps those zones performing.

Thermal Protection

Insulated pans reduce heat loss through spandrel and opaque areas.

Moisture Protection

Sealed corners help keep moisture out of the wall assembly.

Fire Resistance

Stone wool insulation is non-combustible and resists flame spread.

Sound Absorption

Mineral wool dampens noise passing through the wall.

Where Back Pans Are Used

Back pans go wherever a curtain wall or cladding system has an opaque zone that needs insulation and a closed back.

Behind spandrel glass
Opaque curtain wall sections
Behind metal cladding panels
Commercial and institutional facades

Insulation: ROCKWOOL CURTAINROCK®

We insulate back pans with the ROCKWOOL CURTAINROCK® series, stone wool boards designed for curtain wall systems.

Non-combustible. Does not develop toxic smoke or promote flame spread when exposed to fire.
CURTAINROCK® 40 and 80 feature ROCKWOOL ROXUL SAFE™, a fire-stopping system tested and approved by UL, ULC, and Intertek for perimeter fire containment.
Good acoustic performance.
Dimensionally stable, so thermal performance holds through temperature swings over the life of the building.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a curtain wall back pan?

A metal pan installed behind spandrel glass and other opaque areas of a curtain wall. It holds insulation and closes off the back of the opaque zone.

What materials do you use?

Galvanized steel in 20, 22, or 24 gauge, or aluminum.

How deep can back pans be?

From 3/4" to 8", depending on the wall system and insulation thickness.

What insulation goes in the back pans?

Semi-rigid mineral wool, typically ROCKWOOL CURTAINROCK®, held in place with cup head weld pins.

Can you make custom sizes?

Yes. Every back pan is fabricated to your drawings and cladding system. Large pans get welded stiffeners for stability.
